Good plan, I would be weary of automating anything because PHI is everywhere. Anything to do with scheduling or files will likely have some PHI and those seem the easiest areas for automation. I would use this opportunity to learn how a small health clinic works and what some of the opportunities you find for improvement you can take notes and think about how to implement a full solution. I would consider taking some free courses in health informatics like the ones offered by John's Hopkins. Good luck with your endeavors. From someone who has gotten in too deep with healthcare projects, there is likely a reason a "simple" solution hasn't been implemented so understanding that prior to suggesting it shows reserve and thoughtfulness. Good luck.

Yes if you are mathmatically inclined. I would look at learning Python and analytics would be an example. You could take this series of classes https://www.edx.org/micromasters/columbiax-business-analytics

Python is the fastest growing programming language and the most used language for analytics (R is the other). IMHO Python is easier to learn and more versitile.

you might also look at pairing it with healthcare specific statical analytics classes like https://www.coursera.org/specializations/health-informatics
