I suggest learning about how the human body responds to various food, educate yourself to motivate the change

Hmm, it looks like they have an entire degree for it!

Emory through Coursera has a free online course called Weight Management: Beyond Balancing Calories, and Newcastel through edX has a free online course called The Science of Weight Loss: Dispelling Diet Myths. I haven't taken either of them but they do look relevant to our discussion here.
