Depending on your current education level the advise would differ. If you haven’t done much university yet definitely invest in some core topics like biology, maths, chemistry and they will help with any future prerequisites plus make it easier to understand complex papers and textbooks. There are also some online free courses such as this coursera class and this. The other thing I would suggest would be checking out any text books that have “intro” in the title, they’re usually have less jargon than more specialised books.
