You might be interested in this free course on Coursera I believe Module 7 discusses all the different monitoring techniques. If I remember right, their conclusion was that all the different methods were much of a muchness when it came to statistical difference in the analytical results, purging or non-purging.

Continue with the excel, it's a very useful skills. I also recommend becoming familiar with the local and state environmental regulations (if you work in government or as a consultant).
