Starting over and trying to break into HR

So, long story short. I'm thinking about a career in HR. I am 33 and an ex-stay at home mom, I'm trying to get back into the workforce in a job that pays fairly well and is stable. I have a friend who is currently in HR who is working with my resume to try to get my foot in the door. I'm not sure if I'm wasting my time or if I should be doing something else. I haven't worked a steady job in years (only seasonal/contract jobs) and I think that may scare off potential employers.

My life goal is to get a Masters, so I am looking at potential paths that may help my career. Right now, I'm considering finishing my AS at TESU, then getting my HRM BS from WGU. I haven't planned out much after that.

I am very good with self learning and was wondering if some free HR related courses (from Coursera, edX, etc), plus past experiences (secretary of various clubs, organizer of PTA activities, customer service rep, virtual assistant) help me land a job?
