Should just be reading volts. Sounds like you have an older multi-meter (with a needle). Current (amps) you have to read in series and those old ones were fused to just a few milli-amps.

You should have it set to volts DC.

But you are feeling the current, so all you're really doing is confirming it with the meter.

As an aside, if you dig this stuff, a basic electronics kit can be had for about $50 and there are free courses (DC circuits since we don't use AC in mods). E.g. https://www.coursera.org/learn/linear-circuits-dcanalysis (I only read the description). Won't make you an electrician, but is handy knowledge when dealing with basic consumer stuff. Second class to cover transistors (think MOSFETs in mechs) and you'll have a good understanding on how these thing are actually working inside.

I haven't gone through any of this material, but admire your passion and want to help.
