Food for thoughters might be interested to know that Johns Hopkins is offering a free course via Coursera on the known information around gun violence in America. It provides a lot of information beyond headlines and anecdotes. It's currently one week in (of a six week program) but I don't think there's any restrictions around timing.
You might want to check out this free on-line course on gun control from John Hopkins: https://www.coursera.org/learn/gun-violence .
