If you want to study the basics of classical sociological theories and theorists, I'd suggest starting off with this free program in Coursera- "Classical Sociological Theory" offered by the University of Amsterdam. It starts with Mandeville-AdamSmith and ends with Elias, and is excellent. The suggested and essential readings are also great. Two of the essential readings are Ritzer's 'Sociological Theory' and Calhoun's 'Classical Sociological Theory' which cover the major sociologists. Apart from that Henslin's 'Sociology: A down to Earth Approach' covers societal institutions and classifications in toto.
